Knowledge and Wisdom

What is the relationship between knowledge and wisdom?

Discover why the Qur'an values learning so highly, from its first revealed word 'Recite', and how knowledge ('ilm) becomes wisdom (hikmah) when it is applied with sound judgement and good character.

Why it matters

We live with more information than any generation in history, yet it is not obvious that we are wiser. Knowing facts and knowing what to do with them are different abilities.

Islamic teaching values both. This lesson explores how it describes knowledge, wisdom and the path between them.

The teaching

A faith that begins with 'Recite'

According to Sahih al-Bukhari 3, the first revealed words of the Qur'an were 'Recite in the name of your Lord who created', followed by a reference to God who 'taught by the pen' and 'taught man that which he knew not' (96:1–5). Reading, writing and learning are present from the first moment.

The Prophet himself is told to pray: 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge' (20:114). Even the one receiving revelation is to keep asking for more understanding.

Knowledge raises people

The Qur'an asks: 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' (39:9), and says that God raises 'those who were given knowledge, by degrees' (58:11).

The Prophet taught that whoever follows a path seeking knowledge, God makes easy for them a path to Paradise (Sahih Muslim 2699). Islamic civilisation's long tradition of libraries, scholarship and science drew on teachings like these.

What is wisdom?

Qur'an 2:269 says: 'whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.' Wisdom (hikmah) is described as a gift, and the verse adds that only 'those of understanding' truly take heed.

Scholars have described hikmah in several related ways: sound understanding, acting correctly, and putting things in their proper place. A practical summary is that knowledge tells you what is true; wisdom guides you in what to do with it, when, and how.

Luqman, a wise man after whom a surah is named, is described as having been given wisdom (31:12). His advice to his son in the following verses combines belief, gratitude, kindness to parents, humility and moderation: wisdom applied to everyday life.

Knowledge that is lived

The Prophet said that when God wants good for a person, He gives them understanding of the religion (Sahih al-Bukhari 71). The Arabic word for understanding here, fiqh, implies deep comprehension, not just memorised information.

Islamic teaching also warns against knowledge that is not acted upon. The goal of learning is a changed life: better character, better decisions and benefit to others.

Open the full glossary
Which knowledge?

Classical scholars distinguished between knowledge every Muslim needs for their own faith and practice, and specialised knowledge (such as medicine, engineering or law) that communities need some people to master. Both were regarded as valuable when sought with good intention and used for benefit.

About a frequently quoted saying

Sayings such as 'seek knowledge even as far as China' are widely shared online as hadith, but hadith scholars have judged that particular narration to be very weak or fabricated. This site only presents narrations whose source and grading have been checked.

Go deeper: Wisdom in the Qur'an's own usage

In several verses, 'the Book and wisdom' are mentioned together as things the Prophet teaches (for example 2:129 and 62:2). Many classical scholars, such as al-Shafi'i, understood 'wisdom' in these verses to refer to the Prophet's Sunnah. This shows that hikmah has more than one meaning depending on context.

Everyday example

Illustrative story (fictional)

Two doctors

Dr Ali and Dr Mensah have the same qualifications and the same knowledge. A frightened elderly patient receives a serious diagnosis.

Dr Ali reads out the statistics accurately and leaves. Dr Mensah sits down, asks what the patient already understands, explains clearly at a gentle pace, and arranges for a family member to be present for the next conversation. Both were accurate; only one was wise.

Wisdom is knowledge applied with judgement, timing and compassion.
