Historical and literary context
Sahih al-Bukhari records that Asma' bint Abi Bakr asked the Prophet whether she should treat her visiting mother kindly, and he said yes. In this narration the narrator Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah linked the verse to the event; another narration of the same event (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620) describes her mother as a pagan.
